They eventually found teaching jobs in logging camps in Ketchikan's outlying bush areas, where conditions were often challenging. In the floating logging camps, children who had not passed the swimming test had to wear life jackets whenever they left home. Snow had to be shoveled off the floats to keep them level and safely above water. Purchasing food--or anything else--required a major expedition to town via watercraft, floatplane, or rugged land vehicle. Yet Don loved the adventure, especially the water activities--boating, jet skiing, fishing--and Biz was happy just being with him. Then cancer struck, and both of their lives changed irrevocably: Don lost the battle, and Biz was left to carry on. Adrift without her partner, Biz learned to accept--and even ask for--support from the tight community. The majestic beauty all around provided further solace as Biz grieved and recovered.
